Fillings

Dental fillings are carried out once a tooth has been damaged. Although there are many types of fillings available, at Cove Dental we only use dental composite or ceramic fillings.

In the past, amalgam or ‘silver’ fillings were commonly carried out in many practices, but at Cove Dental we only use composite or ceramic fillings to replace amalgam fillings or to perform new fillings. Dental composite or ceramic fillings match the colour of your teeth for a more aesthetic and discreet result.

Root Canal Procedure

A root canal is usually a simple procedure with little discomfort. It involves three visits to a dentist. Here is a step-by-step guide to how the procedure saves your tooth.

Your dentist makes an opening through the top of the tooth down to the pulp chamber. The injured or dead pulp is taken out and the root canals are irrigated and medicated.

A temporary filling is placed in the opening at the top of the tooth in order to protect it between procedures. Alternatively, the tooth may be left open to drain for a couple of days.

The temporary filling gets removed and the pulp chamber and root canal(s) are cleaned then filled.

Crowns

A crown is a shell or a cap that goes over your existing tooth. It provides further protection to an already weakened tooth - especially after a root canal treatment. It is a common procedure that not only improves the strength and function of your tooth but also the appearance.

There are various types of crowns but the majority of crowns produced today are made of very hard ceramic. Some patients who had crowns placed a while back may see a darkened line around the margins of their teeth. They function quite well but compared to the ceramic crowns used at our surgery today, aesthetically they are significantly poorer.

If you are concerned with any staining appearing on your crown, please book in for a consultation with our dentist.

Veneer

A veneer is a thin shell that is bonded over an existing tooth to change the aesthetics of the tooth. Vaneers are used to enhance the appearance of teeth that are discoloured, worn or chipped.

They are made of ceramic and once permanently bonded on to a tooth’s surface, they are very effective in masking discoloured teeth and improving the overall shape and alignment of your teeth.

Compared to a crown, the preparation time is a lot less and there is minimal grinding of your teeth.

We recommend you see our dentist to discuss whether a veneer is a suitable treatment for your cosmetic needs.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is needed when a major infection occurs in a tooth’s pulp chamber. Treatment is recommended early to avoid nerve damage.

In order to save the tooth, the infected pulp is removed and the tooth is cleaned and sealed with a filling. This protects the tooth from any further infection.

Signs of an infection include;

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold textures
  • Tooth pain
  • Loosening of a tooth
  • Swelling of the gums
  • Pus or an abscess developing

It is important to treat any discomfort you are feeling as soon as possible. Please talk to our dentist about any concerns you may have.

The procedure is routine, safe and a can provide permanent solution to missing teeth.
